Lean Into the Light artwork featuring Jamie Dose with an acoustic guitar

Jamie Dose was born in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, where the sound of trains and the pull of the open road shaped his earliest ideas of freedom. Music entered his life just as early—first through the family turntable, then through instruments that would become his lifelong companions. By age seven he had a guitar in his hands, and by his early teens he was writing songs, chasing chords, and carving out his own voice.

Growing up across Virginia, Indiana, Ohio, and North Carolina, Jamie soaked in the music that defined those regions—Appalachian roots, bluegrass, gospel, and the rock ’n’ roll heartbeat that carried through it all. He found inspiration at places like Bean Blossom, Love Valley, and Van Hoy Farm, and fell under the spell of the Grateful Dead, whose blend of Americana, blues, and improvisation became a guiding light.

After graduating in North Carolina, Jamie settled into the mountain town of Boone, where music and community went hand in hand. By the time he moved to Asheville in 2000, he was already front and center in the rock and blues scene, performing with bands like Rufus Grove, Velvet Truckstop, and the Artimus Pyle Band. But he never strayed far from his roots: with his great-grandfather’s mandolin in hand, he deepened his connection to bluegrass and the traditional sounds that run through American music.

Jamie’s career has spanned tours, studio work, and a record produced by the legendary Johnny Sandlin of Capricorn Records, connecting his story to the same Southern rock lineage that shaped giants before him. Today, his music stands at the crossroads of rock, blues, and roots—raw, soulful, and rooted in tradition while always chasing something new.

The Dose Project

Music after the storm

In the wake of Hurricane Helene, life on the mountain was brought to a standstill. Power was out, roads were blocked, and clean water was scarce. Music seemed impossible—rehearsals, gigs, even gathering with friends. But as the community slowly reached out to check on one another, something new began to take shape. Old friends reconnected, Asheville and Black Mountain musicians found their way back together, and a pickin’ party at Jamie Dose’s house lit the spark. Even Vince Herman showed up.

What began as a night of healing through music led to an impromptu gig at The Town Pump, where Ty Gilpin of Unspoken Tradition was in the audience. That chance moment grew into an opportunity, and from it, DOSE was born—a new musical project rooted in resilience, collaboration, and the unshakable spirit of Western North Carolina.

With a circle of longtime friends and some of the region’s most gifted players, Jamie Dose is creating music that carries the weight of the storm but also the light that follows it. DOSE is more than a band—it’s a reminder that from the ashes, something brighter can rise. As WNC continues to rebuild, this music is both a reflection of what the community has endured and a celebration of its strength, offering that needed “dose” of hope, healing, and joy.
